Harmony and Me
Texas Competition
(USA, 2009, 75 mins, HDCAM)
Directed By: Robert Byington
The sharp-witted Robert Byington returns with the Austin-shot story of Harmony, a prototype nightmare dumpee—the sort of that heartbroken friend you take out for drinks two or three times before resorting to any excuse to avoid hearing the rehash of what went wrong with his relationship.
Harmony is also a struggling lyricist struggling with his music because he simply refuses to let go of his heartache, but his desperation does not seem to bother this odd ball group of friends, they just seem to be used to it. Byington uses a “stripped down” aesthetic that lends to Harmony’s fall into depression.
But this is by no means a downer story – Byington presents an original film about getting over a relationship that is consistently funny. Never self-indulgent, Byington has made a memorable modern comedy with subtle and sharp performances from his cast.
