Carried Away
Texas Competition
(USA, 2009, 98 mins)
Directed By: Tom Huckabee
In a rare film with both heart and passion that the whole family can enjoy and many can relate to, Tom Huckabee’s tells the partially autobiographical tale of a family in crisis. Ed Franklin, a young man pursuing his dreams in Hollywood, returns home to Texas at Christmas to find his family in turmoil. His parents’ marriage is on the rocks. His younger brother Davy awaits trial for selling drugs. His older brother Steve holds a bitter grudge against him. Worst of all, his beloved paternal grandmother has been committed to a nursing home after suffering a stroke, which has left her suffering from mild dementia. In defiance of his father, Rex, and with Granny’s full cooperation, he breaks her out of the home, intending to take her back with him to Los Angeles. With family in hot pursuit Ed and Granny’s cross-country escape leads to a surprising conclusion in the California desert. Tom Huckabee has worked for more than a quarter of a century as a writer, producer and executive in Hollywood. This truly independent feature is his first directorial effort since attending the University of Texas.
